About Mount Kilimanjaro

Mount Kilimanjaro is a natural wonder located in the northeast of Tanzania, Mount Kilimanjaro is the tallest mountain on the African continent . The mountain is unique as it is the world’s highest freestanding mountain, standing alone without being part of a mountain range, and has five distinct ecological zones. Despite being an active volcano in its early days, it has been dormant for thousands of years. The mountain’s appeal lies in its accessibility, as climbers do not need to be seasoned professionals or in peak physical condition to summit it.

The ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro is a journey through different climate zones, starting from lush and humid rainforest and ending at the arctic summit. Along the way, climbers can observe a variety of flora and fauna, such as colobus monkeys and the endemic impatiens kilimanjaric plant. However, due to climate change, the mountain’s ice cap has decreased by 82% since 1912, and its glaciers by 55% since 1962, according to UNESCO reports.

The mountain’s geological history can be traced back to millions of years ago when volcanic eruptions formed three volcanic cones, which built up to form Mount Kilimanjaro. The highest point on the mountain is Uhuru Peak, standing at 5,895m above sea level on the Kibo crater, making it the highest point in Africa.

The origin of the mountain’s name is uncertain, but many groups from the region had their own names for the iconic mountain. The first recorded person to summit the mountain was a German named Hans Meyer, although locals are believed to have reached the summit before him.

Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro can be a challenging experience, as weather conditions can be unpredictable, with variations in rainfall, temperature, and both dry and wet conditions throughout the year. Nonetheless, Kilimanjaro offers a unique and unforgettable experience for those who are willing to take on the challenge.

Kilimanjaro Climbing Routes and Map

Ascending Kilimanjaro requires careful consideration of the available route options. Factors such as weather conditions, scenic views, level of difficulty, and amount of foot traffic are all important considerations that will ultimately determine the route a climber chooses to take. As a prospective climber, it is essential to select the most suitable route for your abilities and preferences to plan the perfect Kilimanjaro experience.

Lemosho route

The scenic route offers a wonderful panoramic view of the beautiful landscape of West Kilimanjaro. covers a distance of approximately 70km /43.75mlsand typically takes climbers 7 to 8 days to complete. It is widely regarded as the most picturesque way to climb Kilimanjaro and has gained popularity because of its low foot traffic, excellent acclimatization and high success rate in reaching the summit, and breathtaking panoramic vistas. It is strongly recommended for climbers seeking an unforgettable experience.

Machame route

Machame route is the second most popular route on mount kilimanjaro. It covers a distance of 53.1km/33.1mls ,This route known as the whiskey route. it is considered fairly difficult it suitable for more adventurous hiker with experience. typically it offers an excellent acclimatization and stunning panoramic views of the summit. Despite its challenging conditions, it’s a popular choice among our guests due to the high success rates.
For sure it’s a good route, make sure to choose the 7 day climbing program. its possible to do it in 6 days but has low success rates

Marangu route

The Marangu route is one of the oldest and least challenging (suite unexperienced climbers) ways to ascend Kilimanjaro, with a gentle incline throughout. Although the route can be completed in 5 days, we recommend the 6-day option for better acclimatization. It covers a distance of 69km/43.12mls and is commonly known as the ‘Coca Cola route’ due to it’s popularity and it is relatively easy, shortest, cheapest and having fixed huts for the accommodation instead of mobile tents on mount Kilimanjaro. This route is particularly favored during the rainy season, as it ascends and descends using the same path.

Rongai route

This is the only route found on the northern slope of mountain kilimanjaro. situated near the Kenyan border, covers a 70km route that is gaining popularity This is the wind site of the mountain characterized by less and short vegetation. it also offers hikers the view of beautiful landscape of kenyan side.. For the climbers who have no climbing experience, this route is a golden route for them. Though its possible to summit in 6 days, but I strongly recommend to use 7 days for acclimatization that will help you to summit the peak of the mountain kilimanjaro.

Shira route

The Western Breach route is similar to the Lemosho route as it approaches Kilimanjaro from the west. Climbers need to be prepared to acclimatize at a high starting point and the route takes approximately 7 days to complete. It offers a diverse and stunning landscape, including the spectacular Shira Plateau, before merging with the Machame route.

Umbwe Route

The Umbwe route is known for its short and steep ascent, making it a challenging option for climbers. This route is not frequently used and is considered the most demanding on the mountain. Due to its quick ascent and lack of time for acclimatization, the success rate is lower compared to other routes. The Umbwe route covers a distance of 51km 31.87mls and typically takes a minimum of 5 days to complete.

Northern Circuit

Considered as one of the finest ways to ascend Kilimanjaro, the Northern route is relatively new compared to other routes. This lengthy route provides ample climbing time and opportunities for acclimatization, making it ideal for those seeking a higher chance of summit success. As a result, it is among the routes with the highest success rates for reaching the summit. In addition to its success rate, the Northern route is renowned for its diverse and breathtaking scenery, with relatively fewer visitors compared to other routes.

Kilema Route

The kilema route is a new route introduced recently special for Biking /cycling tour up mountain Kilimanjaro before it was for the rescue.
Routes such as Machame, Lemosho ,Rongai, Shira and Western bridge were for trekking on foot . mountain bikes used the Marangu route to climb to the summit of mt Kilimanjaro ,the Uhuru peak but it used to be a major inconvenience ,mixing up cycles and climbers on foot.

FAQs

Is it safe travelling to Tanzania?

Tanzania is a comparatively safe country, especially when you compare to some of the neighboring countries and other African countries. However, it is crucial to take precautions to remain safe in Tanzania.

While your agency or hotel is responsible for your safety, they cannot keep an eye on you at all times, particularly when you are not on the mountain. Although violent crime is not common in Tanzania, it does occur, particularly in Dar es Salaam. Furthermore, pickpocketing is widespread throughout the country, particularly in busy locations like markets and transport hubs.

Our safety measures & Suggestions

Here are some suggestions to stay safe while in Tanzania:

  1. Keep a close watch on your belongings.
  2. Don’t display your wealth.
  3. Wear a money belt.
  4. Be wary of scams and fraudsters.
  5. Don’t allow paranoia to ruin your vacation while remaining cautious.

Most travelers in East Africa do not experience significant losses beyond occasional overcharging.

If you are a victim of theft, hand over your money since that’s what they’re after. If you have been wise and taken out insurance, you should be covered. Immediately notify the police of the incident since they are usually quite helpful, especially when the victim is a tourist. This will also support your claim with the insurance company and may help prevent future attacks against tourists.

Finally, it is a good idea to take a taxi at night, particularly in towns and cities. Bad things tend to happen after dark, as evidenced by a quick review of the Arusha Times. In big cities like Arusha, it is almost necessary to take a taxi after dark.

How many zones are on Mt. Kili?

Unlike many other mountains around the world, Mount Kilimanjaro does not experience significant temperature changes from season to season. This is because of its proximity to the equator. The equator is an imaginary line that runs around the middle of the earth and is the reference point for measuring latitude. Mount Kilimanjaro is located just south of the equator, which means that it receives an equal amount of sunlight throughout the year. As a result, the temperature on Mount Kilimanjaro is determined more by the altitude and time of day than by the season.

When climbers begin their ascent up Mount Kilimanjaro, they start at the base of the mountain, where the temperature is around 70 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit (21 to 27 degrees Celsius). As they make their way up the mountain, they will pass through several ecological zones, each with its own unique vegetation and climate. The first zone is the cultivated zone, which is characterized by farms and plantations. The temperature in this zone is warm , with an average temperature of around 70 degrees Fahrenheit (21 degrees Celsius).

The second zone is the forest zone, which is characterized by dense vegetation and tall trees. The temperature in this zone is cooler than the cultivated zone, with an average temperature of around 60 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit (16 to 21 degrees Celsius). The forest zone is home to a variety of wildlife, including monkeys, birds, and small mammals.

The third zone is the heath and moorland zone, which is characterized by grasslands and low shrubs. The temperature in this zone is cooler than the forest zone, with an average temperature of around 40 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit (5 to 16 degrees Celsius). This zone is home to a variety of unique plant species, including giant senecios, lobelias and groundsel trees.

The fourth zone is the alpine desert zone, which is characterized by rocky terrain and sparse vegetation. The temperature in this zone is cooler than the heath and moorland zone, with an average temperature of around 20 to 40 degrees Fahrenheit (-7 to 5 degrees Celsius). In a rare cases you might be able to see everlasting flowers under rocks and Four striped mouse.

The final zone is the Arctic zone, which is characterized by ice and snow. The temperature in this zone is the coldest on the mountain, with night time temperatures ranging from 20 to -20 degrees Fahrenheit (-7 to -29 degrees Celsius). This is extreme cold.

One of the most challenging aspects of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is the unpredictable weather. Due to the mountain’s great height, it generates its own weather patterns, which are extremely variable and impossible to predict. Climbers can experience everything from bright sunshine to heavy rain and snowfall, sometimes within the same day. As a result, it is essential for climbers to be prepared for all weather conditions, including wet days and cold nights, regardless of when they climb.

Is a Kilimanjaro climb dangerous?

Kilimanjaro can be considered a relatively safe climb when taking the standard routes. Nonetheless, fatalities can occur on any large mountain, and Kilimanjaro is no exception.
The founder of Rashad Adventure with experience of over ten years ,climbing more than 100 times witnessed only three death on the mountain.
The most frequent cause of death is likely altitude-related, resulting from ascending too rapidly without adequate acclimatization. Therefore, choosing a reputable guide service is crucial for a safe and successful climb.

What is Hypothermia?
Hypothermia is a condition characterized by a dangerously low body temperature, which can result from exposure to extreme cold for a short time or prolonged exposure to mild cold. When a person’s deep-core body temperature drops below 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit), it can lead to hypothermia. The temperature of the organs inside the body is more critical than the surface temperature, which cannot accurately measure hypothermia. People may not feel cold, but if they fail to keep warm in a cold environment, they may be at risk of developing hypothermia, bronchitis, or pneumonia, all of which are cold-related illnesses.
